Description
This exhibition sheds light on a lesser-known side of Fernando de Castro—a merchant, poet, collector, and set designer from Porto—revealing his ironic and good-humored perspective through a collection of caricatures that explore society and daily life in the city of Porto.
Despite the austere and baroque atmosphere of his home—now a house-museum—Fernando de Castro cultivated a subtle and observant sense of humor. In his caricatures, he used drawing as a tool for reflection and social criticism, transforming laughter into a form of dialogue with the world.
Among the themes presented, series such as “A Little Geography”—in which national place names are reinterpreted with imagination and satire—and “People of Porto Society”—in which Fernando de Castro captures, with irony and a sense of complicity, the figures and behaviors of the society of the time—stand out.
